WHAT IS A SUPERCOMPUTER?
A supercomputer is one of the biggest, fastest computers in the world, at least 100 times more powerful than a personal computer. Most supercomputers, including Tandy, are made up of many individual computers working together.
HOW POWERFUL IS THE TANDY SUPERCOMPUTER?
The Tandy Community Supercomputer is made up of 100+ high-end servers, each of which is 3 to 10 times more powerful than a PC. Tandy is 250-500 times faster than today’s newest desktop computers, allowing users to get answers in hours or days instead of weeks or months.
WHY USE A SUPERCOMPUTER?
You need a supercomputer when a PC is too small or too slow. This lets businesses solve problems faster or make hard problems solvable.
They are deployed when something is too small, too large, too fast, too slow, too dangerous, or too expensive to work on directly – from predicting storms to crash-testing vehicles to developing new drugs.
HOW MANY SUPERCOMPUTERS ARE THERE, AND HOW DOES TANDY COMPARE?
A few thousand worldwide, most of them dedicated to a single lab, university, or company. Tandy is one of the most powerful systems in the state, and one of the few supercomputers in the world available to an entire community.
WHAT CAN RUN ON TANDY?
Many popular engineering, and scientific programs will run on Tandy out of the box. Several are already installed. Custom in-house software may require adaptation—TSC can help make that determination. PC applications not designed for supercomputing may require more extensive adaptation.
WHAT’S THE VALUE?
Businesses, large and small, can drive huge cost savings using computer techniques and supercomputers. TSC lowers the barrier of entry to supercomputing allowing companies, including those without the resources to build a supercomputer themselves, to reap those benefits at a low cost.
